Fifteenth of Av: Holiday for Jewish Flirtation
(Retold from Mishnah in Talmud Taanis)
Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel said that there were never more joyous days than the Day of Atonement (because it was optimistically hoped that there was a favorable divine judgment granting atonement for all one’s sins on that day) and the 15th of Av.
On those days, Jewish maidens would wear white robes and promenade to the vineyards at the outskirts of the city where the bachelors would gather to watch. The maidens would dance and say, “Look up young man and take notice of whom you are about to choose.”
