Sam Feinstein is one of just 95 students worldwide chosen to spend five weeks this summer at Brandeis University, participating in an intensive residential art and Jewish experience program.

The program, which used to take place in the Berkshires, is called BIMA (Berkshire Institute for Music and Arts). It now occurs on the Brandeis campus in Waltham. Feinstein has received an $1,800 grant from the North Shore Teen Initiative, made in partnership with the Foundation for Jewish Camp, to help cover the tuition at BIMA.

Students selected to participate in the BIMA program focus on one discipline — visual art, creative writing, theater, film, choral music or instrumental music. Feinstein, 14, will be participating in BIMA as an electric bass player, although he also sings and plays piano, percussion and upright bass.

The eighth grader attends Higgins Middle School in Peabody, where he is a straight A student and member of the National Junior Honor Society. He participates in the school band, chorus and jazz ensemble, and is an active member of the drama club.

“I’m very lucky to have a great music program with incredible teachers in the Peabody schools. I think that working with, and getting to know, a bunch of talented musicians will help me a lot to develop as a musician,” Feinstein said.

He is also looking forward to the Jewish element of the program. “Being able to interact and celebrate Shabbat with [this community of musicians] will be very meaningful and beneficial to me,” Feinstein added.

The youth is a member of Temple Ner Tamid and a vice president of Jr. USY. He frequently helps out at the JFS Kosher Food Pantry, and was a peer trainer for the ADL’s “A World of Difference” program at his middle school.

Outside of school, he is a member of the Handel Hayden Society Young Men’s Chorus, and has performed in local theater productions. His other interests include sailing, skiing, hockey and reading.
