Educator Aaron Tornberg is one of many professionals who will be teaching youngsters, ages 7 through 14, in their specialties at North Shore Community College’s Summer of Discovery.

Tornberg will teach two popular courses: Claymation and filmmaking.

Claymation is a form of stop motion animation used in the TV show ‘Gumby,’ the short films ‘Closed Mondays’ and ‘The Sand Castle’ and a series of one-minute films ‘The Presentators’ aired on Nicktoons.

“We’ll be making little clay short films,” Tornberg said. “Part of the process is the kids make the figures and then they film them in stop motion with special software designed for kids. We sit in the class and the kids write the story to an extent — I push them along and get their creative juices flowing.”

Last spring, his class made a film about animals who are looking for their friends.

“The kids do the voiceovers. They are the animals. It’s cute,” he added.

In his filmmaking class, he will teach the basics of scriptwriting, producing, directing and shooting a film.

Tornberg, who has degrees from Virginia Polytechnic and Harvard University, is versed in video game design, Lego engineering and comic book design which he does for Computer Explorers of Stoughton, where he works when he is not teaching.

North Shore Community College offers weeklong classes for four weeks this summer on the Lynn campus, beginning July 13 and ending the week of August 3. Class hours are 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. (with 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. available). Tuition is $249 per week.

There are 10 courses available. Among them are: the Magic of Flight, Robotics, Jazz Flies, Cooking, Computer Game Designers and Animal Care.
